L Ayanna J, Author, Spoken Word Artist, and Creative Catalyst. AyannaSpeaks is more than a name; it is a platform of transformation, a sanctuary for the silenced, and a stage designed to promote inspirational, thought-provoking, and reality-based healing. We are here to ensure that your story is no longer discussed in hushed tones or buried under the weight of “being strong.”
Pain is a silent architect. It builds walls around your heart and ceilings over your potential. But what happens when you decide to take those bricks and turn them into a bridge? Spoken word poetry is not just about rhyming or finding a rhythm; it is an act of spiritual surgery. It is the moment where raw storytelling meets poetic brilliance to create a mirror that reflects your true, unchained self.
If you are carrying a burden that feels too heavy to speak, it’s time to write it out. IT’S TIME to take the narrative back.
Here is the 5-step framework to transform your deepest pain into a spoken word poem that heals.
Step 1: Confronting the Ghost (The Raw Truth)
You cannot heal what you refuse to reveal. The first step in this framework is to stop running from the discomfort. We often try to dress up our pain in “pretty” language before we’ve even looked it in the eye.
Don’t worry about being a “good writer” yet. Right now, you are a witness. Grab a notebook and write down the absolute, ugly, unvarnished truth of what hurts. Is it betrayal? Is it the feeling of being the “other woman” in your own life? Is it a spiritual bondage you can’t seem to shake?
Write down the sensory details of the pain. What does it smell like? What does it sound like in the middle of the night? By externalizing the trauma, you stop being the container for it. You become the observer. This is where deliverance begins.

Step 2: The Battle of Narratives (Conflicting Voices)
Inside every person who has experienced trauma, there is a war of words. There is the voice that says, “I am broken,” and the voice that whispers, “I am surviving.”
To create a powerful spoken word piece, you must give both of these voices a seat at the table. This is a technique called Conflicting Voice Poetry.
Try this: Split your page down the middle. On the left side, write what the pain tells you about yourself (“You are not enough,” “You will never finish this”). On the right side, write the rebuttal of your spirit: the “Remixed” version of your story.
When these two voices interact on the stage, it creates a dramatic tension that resonates with the audience because it is real. It exposes the lies we’ve been told and replaces them with a prophetic certainty.
Step 3: Metaphorical Alchemy (Turning Lead into Gold)
A poem becomes a healing tool when it stops being a report and starts being an experience. This is where we use imagery to bridge the gap between the physical and the spiritual.
Instead of saying “I was sad,” say “My heart was a house with the windows boarded up and the electricity cut off.”
Metaphor allows you to describe the “indescribable.” It gives the reader/listener a handle to hold onto. In my work, I often talk about healing from bondage, and we use the imagery of chains, mirrors, and keys.
Ask yourself:
- If your pain was a weather pattern, what would it be?
- If your healing was a garment, what fabric would it be made of?
- If your voice was a weapon, would it be a shield or a sword?
By transforming your pain into an object or an element, you take away its power to haunt you and give yourself the power to shape it.

Step 4: The Rhythm of Release (The Vocalization)
Spoken word is meant to be spoken. There is a physiological shift that happens when you move words from your mind, through your throat, and out of your mouth. It is a physical eviction of the trauma.
Once you have your draft, read it aloud. Notice where you lose your breath. Notice where your voice cracks. Those aren’t “mistakes”: those are the places where the healing is working.
The 3-8-12 rule of engagement is vital here. Vary your sentence lengths. Use short, punchy lines for impact (3 words). Use medium sentences for storytelling (8 words). Use long, flowing sentences for emotional builds (12+ words).
The Practice:
- Stand in front of a mirror.
- Breathe from your diaphragm (your power center).
- Record yourself. Listen back not to critique your voice, but to hear the authority returning to your tone.
As you recite your lines, you are practicing self-validation. You are telling your brain, “I see you, I hear you, and you deserve to be free.”
Step 5: The Ritual of Resilience (Integration)
Healing is not a one-time event; it is a lifestyle. Once the poem is written and spoken, you must seal the work.
Many writers feel a “vulnerability hangover” after writing something so raw. This is where you incorporate self-care rituals. Whether it’s a quiet moment of meditation, a walk in nature, or engaging with spiritual texts, you must refill the well you just poured from.
I highly recommend pairing your writing practice with intentional reflection. My book, Words of My Mouth, Meditations of My Heart, is designed for exactly this: helping you align your spoken words with the inner healing of your soul.

Why This Matters Now
The world is full of people who are “performing” happiness while dying inside. We don’t need more masks; we need more mirrors.
When you turn your pain into poetry, you aren’t just helping yourself. You are creating a map for someone else who is still lost in the woods. Your “poetic brilliance” is the flashlight they’ve been praying for.
Are you ready to stop being a victim of your story and start being the author of your healing?
It’s time to move from silence to strength. It’s time to move from bondage to breakthrough.
IT’S TIME.
